JOSEPH GALLAGHER
Heritage Officer,
Donegal County Council

Hailing from Meenmore, Dungloe, Dr Joseph Gallagher’s studies and interests have taken him far from home. Heading to Galway to take up a place as an undergraduate at University College Galway, he studied geography and graduated with a Bachelor of the Arts. He also completed a higher diploma in education before his studies took him across the Atlantic, to Illinois in the United States, where he completed a Masters Degree.

He then came back to Ireland before taking a position in England as a senior lecturer in Geography at University College Chichester. While there, he did his Ph.D. in Geography.

His background in geography was good preparation for his role as Heritage Officer due to the broad nature of the subject, which encompasses the cultural and social aspects of life, as well as the geographical. Coupled with Joe’s keen passion for local history, it provides a perfect fit with the natural, the built and the cultural heritage elements intrinsic in his role as Heritage Officer.
